Yaore Ceremonial Masks

The Yaore, a subtribe of the Baules, are located in central Ivory Coast. The members of the Gye society who wear these masks act like judges and policemen and take important decisions concerning social and political conflicts, including the conduct of war. Women are not supposed to see the Gye masks and it is said that they would die if they did. The mask rituals are held in the sacred woods to chase evil sorcerers or troublemakers and also for funeral services of the members of the clan.

Sophisticated and stylized with refined and polished faces, curved eyebrows, coiffed beard and delicately detailed hairstyles, these masks are similar to those of the Guro. Yaore masks, though, have a distinctive zig-zag line framing the whole face or, sometimes, running from ear to ear. The masks are usually surmounted by birds, animals or human heads.
